Jim Greenwell grew up on the backside of Churchill Downs, hotwalking for his father at twelve. His father never got a horse to the Kentucky Derby. Jim has spent thirty years trying to finish the job.
When a rival’s Derby prospect comes on the market in the middle of a divorce, Jim gets one chance to buy him, and the seller wants one check for everything: forty horses, the farm, the staff, and whatever is owed. Jim writes it.
Now he has fourteen weeks to get the colt down the Road to the Derby. A young trainer who says the horse needs rest. A veteran jockey with more past than future. An exercise rider who wants the mount. A vet who won’t tell him what she knows. A trip to Saudi Arabia to keep the lights on. An ex-wife with a lawsuit and a claim on the horse. And a billion-dollar industry that runs on spit and handshakes, where the one thing nobody checked is the one thing that will cost them everything.
